Kenneth Carpenter papers, 1959-1961.

Relating to the design and printing of William Everson's The Year's Declension. Carpenter designed and printed the book of poems. Included is his correspondence with Everson and with Henry Evans (Porpoise Bookshop); corrected proofs; mock-up, announcement and prospectus, etc.: correspondence re distribution of the book; etc.

Evans, Henry Herman, 1918-1990

Henry Evans was born in Superior, Wisconsin in 1918. He came to San Francisco and opened the Porpoise Bookshop in 1944. Evans subsequently acquired an 1852 Washington hand press on which he printed books and pamphlets. In 1958 he began printing linoleum block botanical prints on the same press, for which he gained worldwide renown. Evans passed away in 1990. Everson, William, 1912-1994

American poet, printer, and activist. Everson was a conscientious objector during the later years of World War II, and was associated with Kenneth Rexroth and his circle in San Francisco in the late 1940s. He converted to Roman Catholicism in 1949, joined the Catholic Workers Movement, and eventually entered the Dominican Religious Order in 1950, taking the name Brother Antoninus. Everson was associated with the San Francisco Renaissance of the late 1950s. He left the Dominican order in 1971. ...
